Trial Opens

The trial of a former police inspector accused of mishandling an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against police officers has opened in Hamilton.

John Dewar has pleaded not guilty to four charges of wilfully attempting to obstruct, pervert or defeat the course of justice by suppressing or failing to act on allegations made by Louise Nicholas.

He was head of the Rotorua CIB at the time Louise Nicholas made her initial allegations in the 1980s.

Mrs Nicholas made rape allegations against Assistant Commissioner Clint Rickards, now former officers, Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum and another former officer who has name suppression.
