Former police chief faces trial over Nicholas rape case

The High Court has heard allegations a former Rotorua police chief covered up sex allegations against convicted rapist Brad Shipton because of the men's friendship.

The prosecution has opened its case against John Dewar, who is charged with attempting to obstruct or defeat the course of justice.

He was the head of Rotorua's CIB when Louise Nicholas made rape allegations against Clint Rickards, Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton in 1993.

They were acquitted of the charges last year.

At the Hamilton court today, the Crown said Dewar suppressed her allegations and gave inadmissible evidence during a trial.

Former police chief on trial for obstructing Nicholas rape case

A former head of the Rotorua CIB has pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstruction of justice during his investigation of an historic rape charge.

55-year-old John Dewar of Hamilton is facing four charges of attempting to obstruct or defeat the course of justice between 1993 and 1995.

It is alleged that Dewar suppressed sex offence allegations by Louise Nicholas against Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards and former police officers Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton.
