Nicholas vs John Dewar |

A jury has heard how Rotorua's
former top policeman privately admitted to Louise Nicholas he did not think
the sexual use of a baton on her was consensual but also cautioned her not to
'stir up the past'. 55-year-old John Dewar is on trial
at the High Court in Hamilton on four charges of attempting to obstruct or
defeat the course of justice between 1993 and 1995. Dewar was Rotorua CIB's head when
Mrs Nicholas approached police in 1993 with allegations against Clint
Rickards, Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum. The Crown alleges Dewar suppressed
allegations she made against the three men and attempted to pervert the
course of justice in another rape trial. She met with Dewar in 2005 wearing
a hidden microphone where he cautioned her about stirring up the past and
told her to 'move on', despite admitting he did not think she had consented
to having a police baton used on her. On the tape Dewar also tells Mrs
Nicholas that he is close friends with Clint Rickards and convicted rapists
Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum. The trial came to an unexpected
halt today after a juror fell ill. Cross examination of Mrs Nicholas
will continue tomorrow. |
