Jury in Dewar case told he gave inadmissible evidence in trials

A jury has heard how in two sexual assault trials bought by Louise Nicholas - a former senior policeman gave inadmissible evidence causing the trials to be aborted.

55-year-old John Dewar is on trial in Hamilton on four charges of attempting to obstruct or defeat the course of justice in relation to Louise Nicholas's complaints of sexual offending by police officers in the 1980s.

The jury today heard from District Court judge Leslie Atkins who was a defence lawyer on one of the cases.

He told the High Court how in two trials Dewar gave inadmissible evidence - and how he seemed untroubled when two mistrials were declared.
