The prosecution will today rest
its case against a former Rotorua detective, charged with attempting to
defeat or obstruct the course of justice. It is alleged John Dewar failed to
properly investigate rape allegations against Clint Rickards, Brad Shipton
and Bob Schollum. He has denied having a close
friendship with the three men, but the court has heard testimony from a woman
claiming to have engaged in group sex with all of them. She told the court
she came forward after hearing John Dewar deny on TV knowing the other men,
apart from in a professional capacity. Four policemen involved with the
2004 Operation Austin will today take the stand for the Crown. The
investigation probed claims of historic police sex crimes after Louise
Nicholas went public with her allegations. Clint Rickards described Operation
Austin as "a shambles" after his acquittal, and said he would have
been ashamed to have led it. The defence will open on Monday and it is
expected John Dewar will be the only witness. |
