Friend talked about group sex session - witness

A man testified in the High Court at Wellington yesterday that a friend spoke excitedly about a group sex session where an object was used as a sex aid.

The man, whose name was suppressed, said he understood the acts had been consensual.

He understood another friend had also been involved, but when it was discussed with him he could not remember the details.

The witness's two friends are accused with two other men of detaining a 20-year-old woman with intent to have sex with her and raping her at Mt Maunganui in January 1989.

Two of the men also face charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and one faces another rape charge.

All the charges are denied.

The woman, now 37, denied willingly having sex.

Justice Ron Young has suppressed key details, including the accused men's names.

It is understood the men deny an object was used.

Another witness Kent Jarman told the court one of the accused told him about sexual activity that he understood to be consensual. The tone of the conversation had probably been boastful.

He was told that one of the men who took part in the sex act had done so reluctantly.

"That is one of the comments that stuck in my mind," Mr Jarman said.

Maree Judson said she was with the alleged victim in Mt Maunganui after Christmas 1988.

She said the woman had been strong-willed, assertive, bubbly, and outgoing. At one point the woman said she was going away and did not give a clear reason for her absence.

Upon returning, she was withdrawn, uptight, and not her usual self.

Around this time, two men would regularly visit.

She said she only recently remembered who the two men were.

The trial which began on Monday is expected to last at least another week.
