Rape-accused man takes stand

One of the accused in the High Court trial of four men allegedly involved in a pack rape in Mount Maunganui 16 years ago has taken the stand.

The man and his three co-accused deny raping and abducting the woman.

The 53-year-old man, whose name and occupation are suppressed, told the court one of his co-accused raised the issue of having sex with the woman at an empty building

He went along because he saw the opportunity of joining in and having group sex.

Upon arrival he felt he was welcome to be there, and if told he was not he would have left.

Crown prosecutor Mark Zarifeh challenged him on his statement that he'd never had to rape a woman.

The accused replied that he had never had problems getting women.
