The jury in a pack rape
trial in Wellington has been told that the case is essentially a simple one. Four men are accused of
abducting and raping a 20-year-old woman in Mount Maunganui 16 years ago. Opening the defence
case lawyer Paul Mabey QC told the Wellington High Court jury that the case
came down to a simple issue - whether or not the complainant consented to
have sex. He said it was not about the morality of group sex. Giving evidence Mabey's
client said he went to the group sex encounter with one of the other accused
in the hope of joining in and would have left if the complainant objected. He
says he has never raped anyone. The prosecution
completed its case on Monday with the court hearing statements the accused
gave to police. One of the accused told
police last year that the complainant was excited at the prospects of having
sex with more than one man. Another told police that when he followed the
others and had sex with the woman she didn't appear to be traumatised and
enjoyed it. |
