Allegations of Sexual

The appeal against the
conviction of four men for the pack rape of a woman in Mount Maunganui 16
years ago has begun. In July 2005, the four
men were found guilty of attacking a 20-year-old woman in 1989. However, two of the men
- who still have their names and occupations suppressed - were found not
guilty of using an object to sexually violate the woman during the same
incident. The lawyers for the
four convicted men told the Court of Appeal in Wellington that the rape
convictions should be overturned because of the inconsistency of the verdict. They said it didn't
make sense that the jury decided that the woman was lying about the use of
the object, but telling the truth about everything else. |
