The Crown has read out
an e-mail exchange which it believes shows collusion between two men to
produce fresh evidence in a rape case. It relates to the
conviction of four men for a 1989 pack rape in Mount Maunganui. Evidence of an alleged
meeting between the victim and one of her attackers is central to the appeal
hearing. Prosecutor Brent
Stanaway has tried to cast doubt on the validity of the evidence by reading
e-mail conversations between the two men who claim to have witnessed the
meeting. One reads 'you need to
whack something up like this attached, feel free to save and re-jig mine.' Mr Stanaway says in the
e-mails, the victim is also referred to as 'the slapper'. He also points out
that the corroboration has come since the men received a letter from their
jailed friend. |
