Not guilty verdict delivered at High Court in Auckland

A jury at the High Court in Auckland has returned verdicts of not guilty against all three accused in the police sexual assault trial.

Suspended Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards and Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum were accused of kidnapping and indecently assaulting a woman in Rotorua between November 1983 - August 1984. The complainant was aged 16 at the time.

They denied the charges. The trial began in the High Court in Auckland on February 19.

The eight men and four women on the jury started deliberating about 1.30pm Wednesday and retired for the night eight hours later. They resumed at about 9am Thursday.

The jury returned verdicts of not guilty on both charges for all three accused.

Previous verdict

Last year, a jury cleared the three accused of 20 charges of sexual violation and indecent assault against Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas in 1986.

The jury of seven women and five men delivered its verdict on 31 March 2006 after three days of deliberations following a 2½-week trial at the High Court at Auckland.
