ACC gets 20 child abuse claims per week
The
Accident Compensation Corporation says its sensitive claims unit is dealing
with about 20 claims each week, relating to children who may have been
abused.
The Minister of Health, Annette King, has expressed concerns about the
number of doctors claiming money for children who have been abused, without
notifying welfare authorities.
A spokesman for the ACC, Richard Ninness, says the claims are dealt
with under confidentiality.
He says ACC does not know whether criminal activities are involved in
the cases, because it provides any necessary treatment without asking for
proof of abuse.
The Medical Association says the ACC's figures come as a surprise.
