The trial of a New Plymouth doctor
who faces 37 charges of indecent assault and one count of sexual violation
got under way in the High Court in New Plymouth this afternoon. The charges against the family
doctor cover the period from 1981 to 2002 and involve 12-female patients
between the ages of 15 to 50. The Crown intends calling 12
witnesses, who allege they were sexually assaulted at the GP's surgery. In the Crown's opening submission
this afternoon the jury heard about a number of young women who went to the
doctor and were upset by the nature of the examination. They were required to remove all
their clothes, no nurse was present, their breasts were inappropriately
touched and caressed and their vaginal examinations were done in a sexual
manner. The trial is expected to last four
weeks.
