Respect
Letter to the Editor
by Sue Lester, New Plymouth

For 20 years, I have been a patient of Dr Hiran Fernando. Contrary to the outcome of his trial, I still totally believe in his innocence and will continue to be a patient of his, should the Medical Council agree to let him continue in the medical profession.

Dr Fernando has also been very receptive to answering any questions about the allegations of misconduct made against him, leading up to his trial.

I, and many others I have spoken to, agree that we have all been treated with respect and professionalism at all times by Dr Fernando.

The allegations made by former patients all centre around intimate medical examinations, and considering the indignity one goes through when this examination is performed, a personal judgment as to what is deemed to be acceptable and appropriate is just that -- is purely a personal opinion.
