Allegations of Sexual
Abuse in NZ |

Suspension seems likely for a New
Plymouth doctor who committed sexual offences against his patients. Hiran Fernando was found guilty of
indecently assaulting female patients between 1981 and 2002, but has been
entitled to continue working. The day after the verdict the
Medical Council wrote to the doctor, advising him not to continue practising.
Hiran Fernando had a week to respond before the Council could formally suspend
him. That submission arrived at the
Medical Council just in time yesterday afternoon, however it has been
confirmed the doctor has already stopped practising. The Medical Council will consider
whether to suspend Dr Fernando next week. |
