False rape charge to be heard

A 19-year-old Hamilton woman whose alleged attacker was beaten about the head with an iron bar was to appear in Hamilton District Court today.

The woman is charged with making a false rape complaint.

Police say the woman had shared a taxi journey from Victoria St to the corner of Snell Dr and Hukanui Rd, Hamilton, with a 26-year-old meatworker shortly before 4.30am on September 7.

The pair got into an argument about the bill and the woman walked away.

Police say that moments later she began talking to four men in another car. She told them she had been raped by the passenger in the taxi.

Two men from the car then attacked the man, hitting him in the face twice with an iron bar. The facial wound required several stitches.

The men in the car took the woman home and told her relatives she had been raped.

The woman's family called police.

Police charged her with making a false complaint last Friday.

Detective Rob Isaac said the four men in the car who attacked the taxi passenger were not known to the woman.

Police are still trying to find the men.
