Rape case a false alarm - police
NZPA

An American tourist who claimed she was abducted from a Dunedin wharf and raped has admitted she made up the story, Dunedin police said last night.

The 31-year-old woman made her confession during an interview with police on Tuesday night detective Mike Bracegirdle, of Dunedin, confirmed.

She had originally claimed to have been abducted from Fryatt St about 8.30pm last Friday, taken to an unknown location and raped, before being dropped back at the wharf area.

Police had yet to decide if the woman would be charged, Mr Bracegirdle said.
