Police charge woman after false complaints of kidnap and rape
A woman with outstanding warrants from Greymouth,
Christchurch and South Auckland has appeared in the Kaikohe District Court
charged with laying a false complaint with Kaikohe police.
She was ordered to reappear on January 28.
Kaikohe Police detective Matt King said the complaint had been particularly
unhelpful.
"We were investigating the genuine case of a tourist who had been bashed
by four people but we dropped everything and pulled out all the stops as the
woman had made allegations of kidnap and rape," he said. Later, she
retracted the claims.
Mr King said he is frustrated at the volume of false complaints being laid by
individuals for frivolous reasons.
"I would like to remind people we will prosecute in cases of false
complaint," he said.
