Woman fakes sex attack

Police are furious a woman faked a vicious sex attack on the shore of Lake Taupo, wasting a day of their time and taxpayer money.

The woman had phoned 111 in a distressed state about 4.40am yesterday, acting Detective Sergeant Andy Allan, of Taupo police, said today.

Police patrol cars were immediately sent to look for the woman, who was found lying face down on a beach, her body partially in the water.

Her clothes were ripped and she appeared to be unconscious, Mr Allan said.

"There were factors at the scene which indicated this woman had been the victim of a vicious sexual attack."

The woman was rushed by ambulance to Taupo Hospital, and on the way told police she had been violated by an unknown male.

"After investigating this matter for the entire day, it became apparent that there were too many inconsistencies in her story and she was brought in for re-interview," Mr Allan said in a statement.

The woman admitted to police that it was a hoax and she had made the scene look like a sex attack had happened.

"She had even gone to the extent of creating drag marks in the sand and she ripped her own clothing."

Police were infuriated, as staff had been called out at 5am and had dropped all other investigations, he said.

"Because of arsons occurring in Rotorua, we couldn't get our police photography squad to attend, so we had to employ a local photographer to take the scene photographs."

A police medical practitioner had examined the woman and she had been hospitalised for some time.

"This is all at the taxpayer's expense and totally a waste of everyone's time and resources," Mr Allan said.

A Taupo woman, 26, had been charged with making a false complaint to police and was due to appear in Taupo District Court on February 7.

On Wednesday, Wellington police said an alleged pack rape of a 15-year-old girl in the suburb of Newtown last month did not happen.

The pack rape investigation had involved 25 police staff.
