Accused of making false complaint

A 26-year-old Taupo woman has been charged with making a false complaint to police following an investigation into a suspected sexual attack last Thursday.

Taupo CIB Acting Detective Sergeant Andy Allan says the woman appeared to have been subjected to a vicious sexual attack on the lakefront. Further investigations now suggest the woman's complaint was a hoax.

"We're absolutely infuriated by this. I had staff that were called out to this at 5am and my squad had to drop all other investigations to concentrate on this for a day," Mr Allan says.

"Because of arsons in Rotorua we couldn't get our police photography squad to attend so had to employ a local photographer to take the scene photographs, we had to get the police medical practitioner to examine her and she was hospitalised for some time as well.

"This is all at the taxpayers' expense and totally a waste of everyone's time and resources."
