Teen wasted murder case time, say police
by Rebecca Palmer

A Feilding teenager wasted 25 hours of police time when he made up a story about the murder of Marton grandmother Mona Morriss, police say.

The boy, 15, approached police, claiming to know who killed Mrs Morriss, the head of Operation Wellington, Detective Sergeant Tim Smith, said.

"He identified a person to us who was the killer and he had an elaborate story to go with it."

The boy was charged with making a false statement and referred to youth aid.

Mr Smith said two officers spent more than two days investigating the boy's claims and he was interviewed twice.

Mrs Morriss, 83, was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in her flat last month.

Mr Smith said police had received no response to a request for sightings of her crochet bag, indicating that the killer might have stolen it.
