Woman facing false rape charges

A woman has gone on trial for making false rape allegations against a police officer.

The Waikato woman claims she was raped on numerous occasions by the man and sexually assaulted by a woman he worked with.

Police claim she lied following her arrest on another matter in 2004. The crown alleges the motive was anger and revenge. After the woman was arrested, she wet herself while in custody waiting to use the bathroom, something the crown says caused her distress and embarrassment.

It was then she claims she was sexually violated by a non-sworn female employee who searched her at the station. Police describe the woman's claims, which include multiple rapes, abuse, threatening letters and emails, as just a fantasy.

The former police officer told the court he had been at home looking after his sick baby son the day police stood him down and an investigation began.

Detectives working on the case began an independent inquiry into the rape claims in Auckland. The court also heard how the officer was several hundred kilometres away on at least one of the days she claimed he came to her house and attacked her.

The woman's complaint was lodged just days after extensive publicity over claims by Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas last year. Her allegations sparked a commission of inquiry and an extensive police investigation involving two dozen officers.
