No charge over false claim

Rotorua: A young Rotorua girl who falsely claimed she was gagged and tied up by boys who cut her hair and slashed her school uniform probably needs “intensive counselling”, police say.

The 14-year-old on Tuesday made a “full and frank” admission but did not tell police why she made up the elaborate story.

Detective Lehi Hohaia said the girl would not be charged at this stage but would be referred to the Rotorua police youth aid section for a family group conference.

“Because of her age and other things, we tend to think she needs intensive counselling,” he said.

The girl’s mother told the Daily Post her daughter needed serious psychological help.
