Bike at centre of Nelson rape inquiry

Nelson detectives are investigating a rape complaint after a 17-year-old woman told police she was attacked by two men in Tahunanui early on Thursday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy said the young woman, a visitor to Nelson, told police she had been drinking with friends before she began walking past Centennial Park towards a Tahunanui motel.

She told police she saw two men riding "double" on a mountainbike before she went to relieve herself in a bush.

She was then allegedly raped by the men, who were aged between 15 and 25. She said they left on foot, leaving the mountainbike behind.

Mr McCoy said the young woman told police the men gagged her, possibly with a T-shirt, during the assault.

Because she had been drinking, the exact time of the attack was unclear, but it was believed to have been some time between 1am and 4am.

Police were to examine the bicycle for fingerprints on Thursday. Six detectives are working on the case, conducting inquiries and a scene examination.

Police are keen to identify the owner of the bicycle, a blue Tarini Tornado, or anyone who saw it in Tahunanui from midnight until 4am Thursday.

It was possible it had been stolen, Mr McCoy said.
