Allegations
of Sexual Abuse in NZ |

A 17-year-old woman
embarrassed about a drunken sexual encounter with two men in a Nelson park
will be charged with making a false statement to police. Six detectives were
assigned to the case after the woman told police she had been gagged and
raped by two men early on Thursday morning at Centennial Park in the seaside
suburb of Tahunanui. She claimed she was
attacked by two men aged between 15 and 25 whom she had seen riding
"double" on a mountainbike when she went to relieve herself in a
bush. The woman had admitted she had been drinking. Detective Senior
Sergeant Wayne McCoy said today the woman would be charged with making a
false statement following police investigations into her complaint. "Inquiries made
with neighbours revealed the victim had not told us the whole truth about the
incident," he said. "Further inquiries
revealed she had actually met these guys earlier on in the evening." Alcohol had played a
significant factor in the woman's actions, Mr McCoy said. "She was
embarrassed about the whole thing afterwards. Her friends found out and she
had nowhere to go basically. "Then of course
she was in a hard place because her friends wanted to make a complaint to
police and she went along with it." Police had spoken to
the woman again today. "She admitted she
made a false statement to us." Police would still like
to talk to the owner of the mountain bike which was left behind in the park,
he said. Several people had reported seeing the bike being ridden by two men
on Thursday morning. The incident was a
timely reminder for people over the New Year holiday, Mr McCoy said. "Look after your
friends." |
