'Helpful leads' in rape inquiry

Timaru police are still hunting for two men who abducted a woman at knife point outside a pub and then took her to Caroline Bay and raped her.

The woman, aged in her early 30s, told police she was forced into a car at the Richard Pearse Tavern some time between 10.30pm and 11.20pm on Monday night. She was driven to the Bay where the rape took place.

The victim had been outside the tavern smoking by herself at the time of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Marion Neill said police were yesterday following up leads that had emerged after members of the public had come forward with "helpful" information.

"We have had some very helpful information. Some have phoned with people that they know who fit the description and we have been able to eliminate some of them from our investigation," she said.

Police are seeking two Maori males in connection with the abduction and rape.

One man had a star tattoo by his left eye. He was described as athletic and was wearing a dark jersey and baggy pants. He had a No 2 haircut.

The other offender was wearing a dark t-shirt, baggy pants and a cap. He had short, dark hair. Both men were between 172cm and 175cm in height.

The attackers were driving an old, square-shaped silver stationwagon with bench seats.

Ms Neill would not be drawn on whether police expected to make an arrest in the next few days.

"I would not like to put a time frame on when it will be resolved."
