Allegations
of Sexual Abuse in NZ |
|
A woman was kidnapped
as she walked along a Wellington street, and was later chased by her
attackers through a popular bush reserve. The Wellington woman,
26, managed to force her assailants to stop, then ran partly clad through
Wilton Bush before flagging down passing motorists to end the 90-minute
ordeal. It began when she was
abducted as she walked along Adelaide Rd, Berhampore, about 7.30pm on
Wednesday. A black four-door
sporty-style vehicle, which was travelling south, passed her, did a U-turn
near Britomart St, and pulled up alongside, Detective Brendan Mears said. The occupants -- two
men -- forced her into the car and drove off. The woman managed to force the
car to stop on Churchill Drive near the entrance to Wilton House and escaped
-- partly clothed and bruised -- into the nearby bush. The men chased her but
she managed to evade them in the bush. After alerting passing
motorists about 8.55pm, she was comforted by members of the public till
police arrived. The vehicle had vanished from the scene. The bush reserve was
cordoned off yesterday as police examined the scene. The victim was
"extremely" distressed by her ordeal. She suffered bruising and
soreness and was examined by a doctor but did not require hospital admission.
Mr Mears refused to say whether the woman was known to the men or had been
sexually assaulted during the ordeal. It was unclear whether weapons were involved.
Police were following
positive leads in the investigation. However, they were keen for any
sightings of the vehicle, possibly a Honda, either in Adelaide Rd or when it
was parked -- in a no-stopping area likely to have caused drivers of other
vehicles to take evasive action -- in Churchill Drive. |
