'Kidnapped' woman arrested

A woman who claimed she was kidnapped by two men in Wellington this week, sparking a massive police inquiry, has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The 26-year-old had said she was abducted from Adelaide Rd in Berhampore by two men in a car about 7.30pm on Wednesday.

She said she managed to force her assailants to stop, then ran partly clad through Wilton Bush before flagging down motorists.

Acting Detective Sergeant Brendan Mears said police investigated the claims and had charged the woman -- who had identified an innocent person as her attacker -- with attempting to pervert the course of justice. The charge was more serious than making a false complaint and carried a maximum penalty of up to seven years in jail.

"Police treat all complaints of sexual violation seriously and investigate them thoroughly," he said. The woman will appear in Wellington District Court on Wednesday.
