Stabbing brings calls

Christchurch police have received dozens of calls from the public after the frenzied daylight stabbing of a female jogger in Styx Mill Reserve on Thursday.

Thirty police are hunting for the man who attacked the mother, 47, repeatedly stabbing her in the abdomen and hands.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Wormald, heading the investigation, said police had fielded many calls about possible sightings of the attacker, and some had provided potential suspects' names. "As a result we're hoping, through timings and sightings, to identify the area where the man came from."

The reserve was popular, particularly on sunny days, Wormald said. "So for someone to make such a blatant attack as that is out of the ordinary."

The man, described as 175cm tall, in his late teens or early 20s, was wearing a grey hooded top.
