Winemaker accused of drugging, rape
by Debbie Jamieson

A Cromwell woman claims she was drugged and raped by a winemaker, Cromwell police say.

The 21-year-old woman and a friend were at a local hotel when they met six men on Monday last week and went back to their motel for more drinks.

The winemaker offered the woman a glass of shiraz, a wine he had been involved in making, Detective Gary Hyndman said yesterday.

The woman noticed white crystals in the glass and he explained they were tartrate salts, a natural by- product of the winemaking process.

She was unsure and stopped drinking the wine.

"She claimed she then went and sat on a bed feeling a bit woozy," Hyndman said. Later, the woman walked back to the friend's house and returned to the motel where she again lay on the bed.

"She passed out and claims she was raped while she was in this drug-induced coma."

In the morning, the woman contacted police. She was medically examined and samples had been sent to ESR for analysis, Hyndman said.

He hoped they would be analysed with some urgency as the winemaker was leaving New Zealand at the end of the month.

"At this stage we're looking for something to confirm drugs were used to induce her to pass out."
