Man charged with false complaint over alleged bus assault

Christchurch police have charged a man with wasting police time over a complaint made about a bus driver being assaulted.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Rae said the complaint made on May 10 related to a driver being assaulted in Kirk Rd, Templeton.

"Some 100 police man hours were spent on this investigation; time we can ill afford to spend on such an inquiry," Mr Rae said.

At the time the complaint was made it was reported that the driver investigated a noise at the rear of his bus and was assaulted by a woman in her mid-20s.

The man is due to appear in court on June 14.

A conviction for wasting police time carries a maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment or a $2000 fine.

The false complaint came just days after a 53-year-old bus driver was attacked by a group of youths, suffering severe bruising, cuts to his head and neck and suspected spinal injuries.

A 15-year-old girl has appeared in Christchurch Youth Court in relation to the earlier attack.
