Girl retracts abuse claims

A man who has spent nearly two years in jail for sexually assaulting a child has had the conviction quashed after the complainant retracted her claims.

The girl, now 8, claimed her mother's partner committed indecencies on her when she was five or six.

The man stood trial in the High Court at Auckland in 2004 and was found guilty of one charge of indecent assault and inducing an indecent act and two charges of unlawful sexual connection. He was sentenced to four years' jail, but immediately appealed.

Queen's Counsel Ailsa Duffy said she interviewed the girl, who had retracted her statement. The girl said she was afraid of her mother's rejection, but wanted to put things right.
