Players cleared in rape claim

A visiting English rugby team has been cleared of wrongdoing after a Palmerston North woman claimed she was raped after a drunken night out.

The woman, in her early 20s, had told police she thought she had had sex with a player at his hotel room but could not remember and feared she had been sexually violated.

Detective Sergeant David Clifford said yesterday a medical examination was performed on the woman after she awoke in hospital not knowing how she got there.

Police spoke to the English player, his teammates and other witnesses, who confirmed the woman met the man while drinking in town last Thursday and returned to his hotel room.

She later passed out and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

After investigating, police had cleared the player and his teammates. No charges would be laid. It appeared the woman had too much to drink and did not remember having sex, Mr Clifford said.

"She got herself into a position where she made some bad choices."

The English university rugby team left for Australia on Sunday.
