Stabbing hoax

A woman who sparked a manhunt after claiming she was attacked by a hooded stranger has been accepted for the police diversion scheme.

In the Christchurch District Court yesterday, the 47-year-old woman was remanded at large without plea by Judge Murray Abbott after a not-guilty plea was vacated so she could complete diversion.

The woman faces a charge of making a false statement to police that an offence of assault with intent to rob had been committed.

Police started a manhunt after the woman claimed she was stabbed in the Styx Mill Reserve, in northern Christchurch. They spent more than 2000 hours investigating the claims.

The judge said that he would continue interim name suppression until the case was next called on August 25.
