'Abducted' Auckland woman made it up
NZPA

An Auckland woman who claimed to have been abducted and set on fire earlier this month made it all up, a police investigation has found.

The 53-year-old Parnell woman told police she was checking her car about 11.30pm on July 4 outside her suburban home when a man got into the driver's seat and drove off with her in it.

She said she was then taken to Lover's Lane in the nearby Domain, where the man doused her and the car in petrol and set them alight.

The Fire Service attended the fire in the Domain at midnight on July 4, where they extinguished a fire in the car, a 1998 black BMW.

The woman is still in hospital suffering from burns received when the car was set on fire.

Police inquiries are ongoing but the officer in charge of the case, Detective Sergeant Brett Batty, said he was confident that there was no offender as described to police by the woman.

It is understood police are considering charging the woman.
