Attention-seeking emergency call

A Timaru man dialled 111 and claimed his neighbour was threatening to kill him with a knife, because he wanted attention.

Gregory Owen Purvis, 29, unemployed, pleaded guilty to making a false complaint to police, when he appeared before Judge Barry Morris in the Timaru District Court yesterday.

Six police officers, including a dog handler, had arrived at Purvis's home as a result of his 111 call. His neighbour, who had an intellectual disability, was questioned by police.

Counsel Wayne van Vuuren said Purvis had been drinking prior to making the call. A relationship had ended and he was feeling sorry for himself.

Purvis did not realise his neighbour had a disability and there had been nothing malicious in claiming the man was the offender.

Purvis was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within nine months.
