Woman charged with false complaint against jockey
by Aidan Rodley

A Napier woman will appear in the Hastings District Court on Wednesday to face charges of making a false complaint against Matamata jockey Michael Walker.

Detective Daryl Moore, of Napier CIB, was reported yesterday as saying the woman had been charged with making a false complaint about an incident on Friday morning.

Walker, who yesterday rode at the Gisborne races, told the Waikato Times he had not acted inappropriately and was relieved the incident was dealt with efficiently.

He said his fiancee Candice Smith travelled to the Hastings races on Saturday to support him, for which he was thankful.

"I just want to put it behind me and concentrate on the job I'm employed to do," he said.

"I'm just grateful for the support of friends and the racing community."

Walker is regarded as one of the most gifted riders New Zealand has produced.

He became the country's top jockey at the age of 16, in his first season of riding, and rode more than 700 winners during his apprenticeship.

He is currently leading the New Zealand jockeys premiership.
