Student details teacher's assault

The trial of a Wellington school teacher charged with sexually abusing a pupil is underway in the Wellington District Court.

The 43-year-old man, who has name suppression, is facing two charges of sexual violation by rape, one charge of indecent assault and two charges of assaulting a child.

The offences all relate to a seven-year-old girl and are alleged to have occurred between January and July 1996.

On Monday the complainant, now a 17-year-old secondary school student, told the court details of sexual assaults allegedly committed on her when she was taught by the accused.

She said the teacher isolated her from the rest of the class and on one occasion he took her out into a corridor and raped her.

The girl also told the court that a second rape occurred some time later in a back room adjoining the classroom.

As well as suppressing the name of the accused, Judge Bruce Davidson, suppressed the name of the school involved and the names of any witnesses likely to lead to its identification.
