Unravelling Secrets of Abuse
Letter to the Editor
by Gordon Waugh,

The article "Unravelling secrets of abuse" (Feb 2) by Simon Collins was courageous. It showed up anomalies in the vexed area of sexual abuse allegations and ACC.

ACC says it requires "satisfactory, verified information to confirm abuse and mental injury". Clients relate allegations of abuse to counsellors. Counsellors believe the clients. ACC believes the counsellors. Use of taxpayer funds and public resources demands an evidential base, not untested hearsay.

Collins mentioned my own case. I want to make clear that the allegations of incest, rape, and the many others from infancy to adulthood were created by the counselling process. They were allegations, not facts.

The ACC claim by the "victim" was not based on anything I, or a dozen other men, were alleged to have done during her infancy and childhood, but on claimed abuse by yet other men during her adulthood. She got lump-sum compensation.

Her complaint to police involved only claims of indecent assault during her childhood, by me alone. But her serious allegations of rape, incest and many other events during infancy, childhood and adulthood, were not reported. Clear evidence shows all the allegations are false. A similar fate has befallen many other men.
