False complaints
Letter to
the Editor
by Bevan Berg, Auckland
The suggestion by police that they are going to get
tough on false sexual allegations is not good enough. They should in the past
have had no hesitation in prosecuting any women making such allegations.
First, we should not apply a different standard simply because the victim is
a male and the offender a female. Second, in a society of diminishing values,
this sort of behaviour trivializes sexual assaults.
Third, not only is this a waste of police resource and taxpayers' money, the
lack of action has perpetuated the situation. A night in the cells might be a
better excuse for being late home, and a day in court a sober reminder of the
consequences of criminal intent.
