A magistrate in Sydney
has ruled two of three Roman Catholic clergymen facing sex abuse charges will
be extradited to New Zealand. The Rev. Raymond
Garchow and Brother Rodger Maloney of St. John of God Church, were ordered to
leave New South Wales to appear in a New Zealand court, TV News Zealand
reported. An order to extradite
Brother William Lebler was rejected and New Zealand prosecutors said they
have not yet decided whether to appeal the ruling. The men have been
accused of 64 charges, some dating to 1955, when they worked at Marylands --
a school for boys with learning and intellectual disabilities in
Christchurch, New Zealand. At the hearing a year
ago in January, one of the lawyers for the defense said all three men were
unwell and Garchow is terminally ill with throat cancer. |
