A prisoners lobby group
is supporting an Australian judge's criticism of the New Zealand court
system. Justice Madgwick of the
Federal Court in Sydney has turned down a bid to extradite two Catholic
brothers accused of abusing boys in Christchurch in the 1970s, partly because
New Zealand judges are not required to warn juries about the dangers of
historical sex prosecutions. Howard League for Penal
Reform president Peter Williams agrees that is unjust. He
says it is of grave concern that the case is so old, meaning it is difficult
to produce witnesses and alibis. Mr Williams says there should be a statutory
provision making it difficult to bring a prosecution of that age. |
