NZ to appeal decision not to allow extradition of Catholic brothers

New Zealand authorities have decided to lodge an appeal against an Australian court decision relating to an extradition order for two Catholic clergymen facing child sex charges in this country.

Rodger Moloney and Raymond Garchow, both of the Saint John of God Order, face more than 30 charges of abusing boys at the Marylands residential school in Christchurch during the 1970s and 1980s.

Two weeks ago an Australian judge overturned an extradition order, on the grounds that the men would not get a fair trial in New Zealand.

Crown Law says an approval has been gained from the New Zealand Solicitor-General and the Director of Prosecutions in Sydney, for an appeal to be lodged against that decision.
