The decision to bring two
clergymen back to New Zealand to face historic child sex charges is being
welcomed by a supporter of the alleged victims. A judge at an Australian Federal
Court hearing had ruled that because of the length of time since the alleged
crimes were committed and the fact New Zealand and Australia have different
legal systems, it would be difficult for 71-year-old Rodger Moloney and
Raymond Garchow, aged 58, to get a fair trial in New Zealand. They are
accused of molesting boys at Marylands School in Christchurch between 1971
and 1980. However five judges from the same court have now decided the
extradition can go ahead. Ken Clearwater of the Male
Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust says he was amazed at the initial decision
not to extradite the pair. He believes the men are only two of six brothers
alleged to have committed such crimes at the school. Mr Clearwater says the
trust is constantly fielding calls from former pupils of various schools who
say they have been sexually assaulted, asking what course of action they can
take. "We're helping them through
that, encouraging them to go to the original dioceses." Moloney and Garchow face a total
of 32 charges of abusing boys. |
