There are claims the alleged
actions of two Catholic clergymen being brought back to New Zealand to face
historic sex charges are just the tip of the iceberg. An Australian court has ordered
the extradition of Rodger Maloney and Raymond Garchow, who are accused of
abusing boys at the Marylands school in Christchurch in the 1970s. Last April, a judge decided
against extradition on the grounds that too much time had past since the
alleged offences. But his decision has been reversed by the full bench of
Australia's Federal Court. Ken Clearwater of the Male
Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust says his organisation is constantly fielding
calls from men who claim to have suffered abuse at the hands of priests,
brothers and other clergy. Clearwater says he is rapt Maloney
and Garchow are being brought back to face the music. However, the pair are planning a
final appeal to Australia's High Court, to avoid prosecution. . The men face a total of 32
charges. |
