Clergymen granted bail in Christchurch

The two Catholic clergymen who were extradited from Australia last night have been granted bail.

Seventy-one-year-old Rodger Moloney and 59-year-old Raymond Garchow face sexual abuse allegations involving boys between the 1970s and 80s at Christchurch's former Marylands School for the intellectually disadvantaged.

The High Court in Sydney turned down an application by the two clergymen earlier this week to appeal their extradition order.

This morning in the Christchurch District Court they were granted bail under conditions agreed upon by the defence and prosecution.

The whole process took less than 10 minutes.

Outside the court, their lawyer, Chris McVeigh refused to comment on the bail conditions. The men will reappear on November 2.

Earlier today the manager of the Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust, Ken Clearwater, told Newstalk ZB the trust had been working on getting the men extradited since 2002 and he is grateful they are now here to face the allegations.
