Women asked to come forward

The head of the police sexual abuse team in New Plymouth is asking women who believe they may have been drugged and raped to come forward.

Sex abuse counsellors in the city say seven women have been sexually assaulted over the past week, after being drugged.

The women - aged between 19 and 38 - have told the Taranaki Safer Centre they woke after a night out to discover clear evidence of sexual assaults.

A spokeswoman for the centre says some had not been drinking alcohol, but still ended up feeling drunk, and passed out.

Detective Sue Ashton of the police sexual abuse team says recent advances in forensic testing have made it easier to detect traces of drugs, so she hopes the women will come forward.
