Hawera Police say women who think they were drug raped need to come forward

The Hawera Police officer investigating two drug rape complaints in the area says the fact women not laying complaints with Police is frustrating.

Hawera Rape Crisis has received nine complaints from women who believe they have been drug-raped, however only two of those women have gone to Police.

The Hawera Rape Crisis national call centre has since received calls from 23 other women who say they too are victims and who rung in because of the publicity.

Detective Sergeant Blair Burnett says claims from other Police officers about woman being too drunk to remember incidents are not helping people who need to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Blair Burnett says people not coming forward can lead to guilty people getting away with a serious offence.
