Teacher facing sexual assault charges named

A primary school teacher charged with indecently assaulting three girls aged under 12 has lost interim name suppression.

Police arrested Michael Warren Neville, 47, who lives in Levin but teaches on the Kapiti Coast, on September 23. They charged him with indecently assaulting three girls, all former pupils aged under 12, between January 1999 and August this year.

Neville, who had been teaching for eight years, has indicated he plans to defend the charges.

Judge Gregory Ross suppressed all of Neville's details when he appeared in Levin District Court on October 1. That suppression was lifted yesterday.

Judge Ross said publishing Neville's name would "clear the air", remove suspicion from other people, and encourage other "potential claimants" to come forward. However, he said the name of the school where Neville had worked would remain suppressed.

Bail conditions prevent Neville visiting the school where he worked, or from any "unsupervised contact" with girls under 14.

Detective Sergeant Peter Govers of Levin said yesterday that a joint investigation by the Levin child abuse team and Child, Youth and Family officials was under way.

"The investigation team is focused on the concern that there may be further complainants, and to this end a confidential information line has been set up for concerned parents."

Parents with any concerns could call 0800 555 700.

A pre-depositions conference has been set for November 5.
