Date set for hearing on Kapiti teacher

A primary school teacher, charged with indecently assaulting four girls aged under 12, made a brief appearance in Levin District Court yesterday.

Michael Warren Neville will face a depositions hearing next month.

Judge Phillip Connell remanded Neville, 47, on bail for the depositions hearing to be held at Palmerston North District Court on December 18 and 19.

As had been the case for his previous appearance, Neville's supporters yesterday made strenuous attempts to shield him from the media -- this time tackling Dominion Post photographer Maarten Holl.

Neville's bail conditions state that he must stay away from the Kapiti Coast school where he taught, not associate with any girls aged under 14, and live at his Levin home.

Neville was arrested on September 23 on three of the charges -- the fourth was added on October 20.

The charges relate to assaults that allegedly took place between January 1999 and August this year, with one complainant saying that he had indecently assaulted her "during class time during the year 2001".
